SEND and alternative provision green paper
The SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) review green paper outlined crucial findings related to the UK’s education system. The findings were wide-ranging coving outcomes for learners, experiences, funding, and consistency.
Children and young people with SEND and those in Alternative Provision consistently experience poorer outcomes compared to their peers. Despite efforts, the system falls short in delivering positive results for these learners.
The SEND and Alternative Provision system often provides a negative experience for children, young people, and their families. Navigating the system can be challenging, leading to frustration and delays in accessing support.
Despite substantial investment, the system remains financially unsustainable. A cycle of late intervention, low confidence, and inefficient resource allocation persists.
There is significant inconsistency in how needs are met across the SEND system and decisions are often based on location or educational settings, rather than individual needs.
The green paper aims to address these issues and create a system that offers the right support, in the right place, and at the right time for all learners, regardless of their challenges.
Why PET-Xi AP works and the benefits of
external providers:
Our goal is to improve the academic outcomes and life chances with learners for whom the standard school classroom environment proves challenging. The model is aligned with the current best practice for SEND and AP, with PET-Xi Xplosive Inspiration added by the bucket-load!
A dedicated PET-Xi team working with AP learners brings a fresh perspective, where learners can find it easier to open up to someone new, sharing their issues and challenges without any pre-existing history.
This multi-pronged approach ensures that learners have more options for seeking help and guidance. With our smaller class sizes, resulting in fewer distractions, learners can focus better, receive personalised attention, and engage more actively in their learning journey.
However, we work collaboratively with pastoral teams in our schools, such as Kelvin Hall School, a co-educational secondary school located in Kingston upon Hull, keeping communication channels open and offering additional support to learners.
Headteacher Chris Leng, said: “We first learned about PET-Xi several years ago while researching solutions to improve student outcomes in maths. After experiencing the positive impact on our maths program, we explored how PET-Xi could support other EBacc subjects needing intervention.”
“We’ve been partnering with PET-Xi for several years. We’ve been consistently impressed with PET-Xi’s service, the quality of staff provided, and the measurable impact on our students’ achievements. Compared to other providers, PET-Xi has consistently delivered a better experience for students and staff.”
“As an inclusive school, we strive to support all students, particularly those who may face challenges within a traditional large mainstream setting.
“Some of our students need access to qualifications and pathways tailored to their specific needs to ensure their success and prepare them for the next stage of education. However, we also want them to have the opportunity to continue studying core GCSE subjects. PET-Xi’s AP program allows us to achieve both goals.”
We implemented the PET-Xi AP programme to provide several key benefits:
• Additional support for accessing the curriculum: PET-Xi’s program provides specialized support for students who might struggle with specific aspects of the curriculum.
• Smaller class sizes: The smaller class sizes offered through the AP program allow for more personalised attention and cater to diverse learning styles.
• Reduced staff pressure: By offering alternative provision, PET-Xi alleviates some pressure on our internal staff, allowing them to focus on supporting the broader student body.
• Safeguarded environment with AP access: Crucially, the PET-Xi program allows students needing AP support to access it within the safe and familiar environment of our school.”
PET-Xi’s involvement has demonstrably improved our school environment and
student success in several ways:
• Reduced staff pressure: The AP program has alleviated pressure on staffing.
• Demonstrated we value our students: Utilising PET-Xi’s AP services shows our students that we prioritise their individual success and well-being.
• Student confidence in subjects: “We are very impressed with the provision; it has bridged a much need gap for us between mainstream and AP provision.”
Why PET-Xi AP Works:
PET-Xi’s dynamic team includes subject experts, support staff, and lead trainers. Their combined expertise ensures high-quality content delivery, keeping the classroom fun and energetic. Learning is made enjoyable and effective, through carefully designed and engaging content. Bite-sized learning modules allow learners to absorb information at their own pace and feel comfortable with the content.
PET-Xi’s approach aligns with the principles outlined in the SEND and alternative provision green paper. By focusing on the right support, at the right place, and the right time, we maximise positive outcomes for learners.
At PET-Xi, we understand that every learner’s journey is unique. Our approach to filling gaps in learning combines expertise, empathy, and innovation.
We begin by conducting thorough diagnostic assessments, to understand each learner’s strengths and areas for improvement. Whether it’s literacy, numeracy, or social skills, we tailor personalised learning plans. To us, missed content doesn’t have to be a barrier; our focused catch-up sessions cover essential topics. Using interactive methods, we reinforce learning, ensuring that learners grasp key concepts effectively.
Our flexible curriculum adapts to individual needs, building strong foundations before diving into more complex areas. But learning isn’t just about academics; emotional well-being matters too. In our supportive environment, we foster resilience, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging. We involve parents and guardians in identifying gaps, creating a cohesive support system.
Regular communication ensures transparency and progress tracking. Leveraging educational applications and online resources, we bridge gaps digitally, empowering learners to learn at their own pace. At PET-Xi, we don’t just teach; we empower learners to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.
