Please note that this article is over a year old, details and information may have changed.

PET-Xi and McCulloch Rail are excited to announce further growth in their Apprenticeship partnership. Starting in 2018 with a small cohort of learners, McCulloch is now looking to recruit their fourth intake to start early April, based in Doncaster.

McCulloch Rail are a company that are specialists in rail handling and rail logistics that provide a highly successful range of services on the rail infrastructure, making it the U.K.’s number one company in its field.

They are committed to developing and investing in their staff both currently employed and recruiting new skills, so much so, that 18% of their workforce are made up of Apprentices, all completing a level 3 Rail Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard.

As one of the UK’s largest training providers, PET-Xi Training has moral purpose at the heart of the work that it does. It focuses on high-engagement training, accelerated learning and breaking barriers with a goal of helping learners realise their potential and progress along their chosen pathways but also for addressing some of the deep-rooted social challenges that exist. Their award-winning, relentlessly upbeat training teams have delivered impact, inspiration and productivity to over 200,000 learners in 25 years across academic, vocational and commercial sectors.

McCulloch are recruiting for more apprentices in the coming months and offer a fully integrated Apprenticeship program using their own specialist trainers and PET-Xi rail expert trainers.

Commenting on this partnership Martin Balshaw said “working with PET-Xi really meets the model of delivery that we are looking for. Working together, we are able to offer an integrated learner journey where the apprentices undertake classroom learning and develop their technical skills and then apply them in the work-place where they are jointly observed with our own staff and the PET-Xi team.”

Within the Standard, apprentices gain knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to work on the track, learning track geometry including track gauge, alignment, elevation, curvature and track surface and the impact of train wheels ; the requirements, methods and techniques for the installation and maintenance of the track (rail, fastenings, sleepers) and the load bearing capacity of the track foundation; the impact of the railway environment e.g. tunnels, embankments, vegetation and drainage. Able to undertake detailed inspection and analyse the performance and condition of track and where appropriate, conductor rail systems, diagnose and correct faults and to use track specific plant and equipment.

On completion of the Rail Engineering Technician standard level 3 apprentices gain a level 3 Diploma in Rail Engineering (Competence) and a level 3 Diploma in Rail Engineering (Knowledge) and also achieve a Personal Track Safety (PTS) qualification required to work in the rail industry.
